Almost There

FF Prompt 2018-05-04 karen-rawson

Photo Prompt by Karen Rawson

“We’re almost there! 15 years have passed since I last stood in this spot. See that roof? That’s the cabin. That wasn’t visible from this spot, once upon a time. Not sure how we’re gonna get across the muck that was once a gentle, babbling brook. And those steps, once solid and surrounded by a forest of green, look pretty questionable now. That cabin was once a safe haven. My happy, hidden place. It’s not on any map. I hope it’s still safe. Take care and keep your head low, though. The world has changed. It might already be occupied.”

It’s been a while since I’ve made time for the Friday Fictioneers. Here’s my 100 words inspired by the photo. Thanks to Rochelle for keeping it going. Thanks also to Karen for the photo.

Solitary

ff-prompt-2017-02-24-sarah_potter-january-snowfall-nighttime

After midnight. Can’t sleep. That committee between my ears making all manner of ruckus. Funny the things that seem urgent in the boardroom of the mind. Rehashing unresolved regrets. Organizing tomorrows to do list. I toss. I turn. ENOUGH. Rolling quietly out of bed, grabbing my robe, I head to the porch with pad of paper and pen. The porch offers solitude and a beautiful view. The world is quiet, all sound absorbed by this mantle of pristine, unmarred snow. It covers everything. Setting pad and pen aside, I sit quietly instead, meditating on the streetlight’s glow. The committee disperses.

Pause

Head down, collar up, feet moving, thumbs texting. Distracted. Absently reaching for the handle, I pulled a door open and entered.

“Please, silence your cell phone.” I looked up, startled. “Turn it off.” Smiling, her face was transformed into love in a hundred soft creases.

I complied. She gestured toward another set of doors and bowed her head slightly. My feet moved forward before my mind caught up. I pushed through the heavy, silent doors and as they closed behind me, I exhaled slowly. Here, hidden in this noisy, busy city, was a haven of peace. The Japanese garden.

The Caretaker

Stored, sometimes forgotten, memories. Stuff. People squirreling away the overflow of abundant lives, enduring the expense for months or years, to hold onto the past or in anticipation of the future.

A child stores an elderly parents effects to deal with later. A couple marries and duplicate belongings end up in a five by ten unit. The downtrodden cache their meager treasures ‘for just a few months,’ fruitlessly hoping to eventually recover their collections.

I watch over all these items. I am here to ensure that your possessions are as you left them. In case you return to reclaim them.

Remembering

ff-prompt-2016-09-23-from-roger-bultot

When I was an adolescent, I could sense extraterrestrials visiting Earth. I would hear a high-pitched tone in my right ear – always the right ear. The first time I heard it, I felt compelled to look to the skies and saw, far off, a shining, oblong shape. It occurred during recess, while playing with my classmates. I believed it was a spacecraft. I shared this information with my playmates. After that, I kept that information to myself. The visits continued to occur for a few years, eventually stopped. I grew up, out grew, forgot. Yesterday, I heard the ringing again.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, as I enjoyed writing it. Thanks to Rochelle for posting the photo prompt for Friday Fictioneers. Special thanks to Roger Bultot for his thought provoking photograph.

This week I’m much later than in the past. School is the challenge, and keeping up with the schedule. I hope to make it in the loop with this story inspired by the weekly photo prompt Rochelle Wisoff-Fields provided.  If you want to participate or learn more about this weekly event, visit her Friday Fictioneers link.  Thanks also to Sean Fallon for providing the photo.  Intriguing. As always, 100 words, fiction, based on the prompt. Enjoy!

FF Prompt 2016-03-04 Batteries copyight-sean-fallon

Closure, kNOw Peace

Feminine energy disguised as common batteries. Her years of searching were over. The energy of innocence stolen, leaving silent, shamed souls to carry their secret for decades, paying a price they hadn’t agreed to, while he continued in pursuit of his next victim. Such an arrogant prick to leave them there out in the open, his trophies. Could it be so easy? Just slip the jar into her hobo bag and walk out? It was and she did. She stepped over his body, never looked back. He certainly hadn’t. She would take hers back after the last ‘battery’ was returned.

The Project

Nick looked in the side mirror of his dad’s SUV at the old cars tied to the trailer.

“Why did you buy those old heaps?” They run on steam. Lame.

Dad sighed. Slowly. They aren’t heaps.

“They’re project cars. To work on during our weekend’s together.” Teenagers.

Nick’s turn to sigh. Deeply. Oh joy.

“Every weekend?” I do not want to spend ‘our’ weekends fixing YOUR cars.

Dad gripped the steering wheel a little tighter. Stay cool.

“Well – yeah – for a few hours anyway. You know, something different.” Divorce sucks.

Nick sat sullenly. “I guess.” Divorce sucks.

Holiday

Standing in the tended garden in the warm afternoon light, she powered down the portal. She’d only just arrived- three months this time. Footsteps approached, crunching on the gravel path. She turned to see him come around the tall hedge. He stopped in his tracks, surprise crossing his features.

“I forgot my sweater,” he said finally, pointing to the concrete bench. “I was at the corner when I remembered.” He continued to stare.

“What?”

“Your clothes, your hair – are – different.” He paused. “It’s only been five minutes.”

She REALLY hadn’t expected to see him so soon after her return.

As a part of a Blogging 101 workshop offered by WordPress it was suggested to find an Event, a weekly or monthly commitment to one of the many participation events offered by fellow bloggers. I searched and found Friday Fictioneers, offered and moderated by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. This is my fourth week of participation, and I am loving this format, this practice of discipline. I’m not quick – the ideas don’t just rush in – but I have been pleased, so far, with what I’ve contributed. Here is this week’s submission:

Parallels

FF Prompt 2016-02-12 Daffodil

When Daphne was very young, the world seemed a dark and uncertain place. The unknown was feared, and EVERYTHING was unknown. She grew, nurtured and nourished by her seemingly drab surroundings. Transitioning from adolescent to teen, her views changed. A positive example to those around her, though she felt awkward, lanky, somehow still in progress. Life presented challenges. She embraced them, moving forward, growing, changing further. Acknowledging experiences as lessons, Daphne, the warmth of the sun shining onto her face, awakened.  All the joys and challenges of life brought her to a single moment of insight, and she blossomed.

Reclamation

Furtively the masses surfaced and observed.

“It has been a long time,” said the king to his queen.

“That hillside hosted only trees when we left,” she replied. “So many dwellings now.”

“It will be as it was soon enough,” he assured her. He reminded her of how it was before; abundant sea life, harmless air, and fertile land.

And the Florasites marched forward to reclaim what they felt was once theirs. The balance could be restored and their Earth would be healed, though it would take time.  And they had an eternity, and an infinite amount of patience.
